The Dogwood Energy Facility is a modern, highly efficient electric generator capable of producing up to 675 MW of power using natural gas.  In 2020 and 2021 Dogwood upgraded its main generating technology to Siemens’ advanced FD6 turbine components, helping Dogwood to become one of the most efficient generators in the SPP region.

The facility has two main generating units, each utilizing a Siemens Westinghouse 501F combustion turbine and sharing a common steam turbine. 

Dogwood is referred to as a “combined cycle” plant because electricity is first produced in the combustion turbine generators, then the exhaust heat is recovered in steam boilers that feed the steam turbine to produce 50% more electricity.

Air emissions from the facility are controlled using Siemen’s dry low-NOx burner technology and further reduced in a catalytic conversion system located in the exhaust stream.  Dogwood emits CO2 at a rate that is about one-half that of a typical coal-fired facility.

Facility Main Components:

  • Two Siemens Westinghouse 501FD2 gas turbine engines equipped with advanced dry low-NOx combustors. The engines were upgraded in 2020-2021 to Siemens’ advanced FD6 turbine technology

  • Evaporative inlet cooling for combustion turbines

  • Two Toshiba 3-pressure, reheat heat recovery steam generators

  • Selective catalytic reduction to achieve low air emissions of 4 ppm NOx

  • A Toshiba steam turbine

  • Seven-cell evaporative cooling tower

  • Two Siemens electrical generators and one Toshiba generator with dedicated step-up transformers

  • Associated mechanical, electrical and control system equipment

  • Zero liquid discharge system for wastewater handling
